Weekly Update 22: September 15-21

This week:

  • I submitted a Freedom of Information request to the council asking for details of any discussions with NUFC about their use of Leazes Park. I have been trying to get answers on this for several months but the replies only discuss planning applications. This is despite me making it clear, repeatedly, that I am asking about the potential transfer of ownership of the land.
  • I withdrew my objection to the licence for the new Tesco on Pilgrim Street after Tesco committed to not selling their apple and pear cider in the new store. They have also agreed to stop stocking it in their other city centre stores. This is excellent news. Prior to this change of heart by them 4 cans could be purchased for £2.80. This equated to approx 8 units of alcohol.
  • I supported residents who are dealing with trade waste issues on the Quayside and in the city centre. Broken and overfilled bins are a nuisance and attract pigeons and rats. We need a more secure solution.
  • I signed up to the Acorn Campaign for Council Tax reform. We need to tackle council tax debt, by using early intervention and support for those struggling to pay, rather than enforcement action and court orders, which can push people further into debt.
