This week, I took part in the Monument Ward Committee – this is an annual meeting that gives residents the chance to hear about what’s been happening in the ward and raise issues that they are concerned about.
There was an update on progress on Northumberland Street, which is now due to be completed by the end of 2025. A lot of people are concerned about bikes using the street and we asked if measures could be put in to restrict / deter access.
There is a wider concern about speeding / dangerous cycling, particularly on e-bikes, in the ward. The increase food delivery via bikes, while it’s convenient for many and supports local businesses and employment, has led to an increase in the number of bikes and the speed they’re travelling at. Residents asked if there could be a registration scheme for delivery cyclists to help improve safety but we were told that this would require national legislation. I am going to contact Chi Onwurah MP to ask if she will support this.
Anti-social behaviour is one of the biggest issues in the ward, particularly in the city centre. Inspector Karen Madge explained what the police are doing to tackle it . This includes working with other organisations to offer support to the people involved – many of the problems are linked to drug and alcohol abuse.
Rats are an ongoing problem and a resident reported that the Victoria Square area is especially affected at the moment. Officers visited the area after the meeting and have asked the owner of the empty building site to treat the area. The council is also checking the communal bins in case there are holes allowing rats to get in and asking Northumbria Water to check the drains.
I also:
- reported a damaged fence on Park Road
- raised concerns about two licensing applications for off licenses
- contacted the Parks team about the use of Leazes Park for events – this limits access for residents and is causing damage to the park
- had my monthly surgery at the City Library on Saturday morning. This is a drop-in session for anyone who wants help with either a council service or a problem they may be having with a landlord or other organisation; or to raise an issue they’d like me to take up.
